An early 20th century Markneukirchen school German violin bow in nickel and ebony, reminiscent in style of Nurnberger productions of the era. The bow features an octagonalpernambuco stick, with silver lapping and brown leather thumb grip. The bow is stamped TOURTE on the players side and branded GERMANY on the bottom flat of the stick directly behind the frog. This is a very firm, yet responsive bow with all the earmarks of a much more expensive master French bow.
The Nürnberger family produced a large output of high-quality bows from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. The early 1900’s marked a major shift for the brand, switching from a German model to one inspired by French master, Francois Tourte. Through savvy exporting, Nürnberger bows gained popularity in the United States negotiating distribution through the New York firm of Rembert Wurlitzer, many of which were marketed bearing the “Tourte” stamp.
